    I love telling stories that resonate with a donor. If the donor loves soccer, I will tell the story of a sponsored child who leads the soccer team.

    If I have a donor who is passionate about helping single moms, I’ll tell her about Alicia, a single mom of three who is now working as a medical assistant after years of struggling.

    Knowing what makes your donor tick is the key to finding the right story. it’s all about building that relationship!

      Dig this @maryr-snyder! Telling a story that resonates means ya gotta listen to the donor, but you’ve also got to have a deep well of stories to share. What are your favorite tools to capture and collect stories of impact?

        My favorite tool for capturing stories — recording conversations. I always ask for permission! When I record the conversation, I can stay fully engaged and present.

        Of course, once it’s recording, we have to transcribe it, categorize, and file it in the story library.

        Stories libraries are a must for nonprofits!!

    I have started asking business and corporate underwriters about their mission and values. I then ask them how they see our annual arts festival reflect their businesses’ values or mission in the event. If they don’t see a direct connection, I offer possibilities where their commitment to quality, service, community, etc. can be seen through the Smoky Hill River Festival and the difference they make by supporting the event.

      This is so good! Showing your supporters how your mission aligns with their values returns value! Great plan — and helping them see themselves in your work is so key to longterm support.
