Day 2: The Personal Touch

Here we are for Day Two of the weekly challenge.  Today you’re going to call two recent donors and thank them for their gift.

Here’s a script for you to customize for your organization.

Hi Donor, it’s Josh from Feeding Families — and I’m not calling for money!  I just saw that you made a super generous gift yesterday.  And so I’m calling to tell you how grateful we are for your gift and that it’s going to make a really meaningful difference.  I’m always amazed at the generosity of our friends and supporters.  So, THANK YOU — on behalf of all of us here at Feeding Families and the people your gift will help.

This might be uncomfortable for you.  I get it.  But here’s the thing — there’s like a 90% chance you’re gonna leave a voicemail.

So lean in to the tension and give it a try.

Once you’re done, comment below with the donor’s reaction and how YOU felt after making the calls.  Then respond to two of your peer’s posts.

I called two donors before I lost courage. Unfortunately no one picked up the phone so I left long-ish voicemails. Does that count?

It felt good. I think I’m getting better at this because I felt I didn’t sound so awkward.

@manisha-nordine, way to do the hard thing and lean into the discomfort! YES! Voicemails count. And they’re wonderful. Especially as you work to get some reps, voicemails can be great practice.

Thanks for taking the time to work on this today!

Congratulations. I’m hoping to have your courage later today. It seems crazy to me that I would rather get on stage in front of 500 people than make one phone call. But there it is …

Since I’m a consultant, I decided to call two potential clients and ask them for a meeting! One was a COLD call, like frosty cold. It was to an organization I respect and would love to work with — and I left a voice mail. Let’s see! The other was to a potential client that I’ve met with but not worked with, YET! And I asked to meet. We’ll see what happens.

    Thanks for the inspiration @josh-alcorn

Frosty cold calls are so fun (for people like me). Zero expectations and so any win is a huuuuuuuuge one.

Frosty and cold – I love these descriptions. This helps me put it all into perspective. Thanks!

I had three grant reports due to the California Arts Council today. I am hoping to catch up tomorrow.

I would love a call from the groups I give to but I rarely get anything. I try to do what I would want as a donor.
