Weekly Challenge March 4 — Start Here!

    Here’s a quick story.

Back in the 90s, I would call up my Grandfather when I had a question about something.  Chances were, he knew the answer.  And if he didn’t, he’d look in the World Book Encyclopedia on his bookshelf.  If that didn’t work, he’d call the Philadelphia Free Library and ask the person on the phone the question.  A few hours later, he’d get a call back with the answer.

And then one day he showed me a search engine — MetaCrawler.  He typed in ‘population of West Chester, PA’ (where he lived).  And got the answer.

“Joshua, what are those people at the Philadelphia Free Library going to do now?” he asked.

New technologies like AI and ChatGPT (and search engines in the 90s) can be hard to integrate into our daily lives.  Partly because they’re new and maybe a little scary.  But they’re also hard to incorporate because we just don’t think of them first.

We keep on doing things the way we always did.

So this week’s challenge is to get some reps using Artificial Intelligence.  AI.  ChatGPT.

Because AI can be an incredible tool — if you think to use it.

What I’d like you to do is at least twice a day over the next week ask ChatGPT to help you with something.  It can be anything (a big list of ways to use ChatGPT, things to ask it, ways it can help, is in this discussion thread).

Just put in a prompt and see what it kicks out.  The goal here isn’t to get you great answers or get your work done faster.  That can be a side benefit, of course.  But the goal of this week’s challenge is to get you thinking of ChatGPT as a place to for help.  Like the Free Library or Google.

So head over to https://chat.openai.com and click the blue sign up button (or log in!).  Keep that window open in your web browser and turn to ChatGPT at least twice a day.

Leave a comment below and let me know you’re in for this challenge!

And by the way, ChatGPT can give you a lot of BAD information — just check out this TT where Steven gets a pretty rough first draft of a fundraising appeal back from ChatGPT.

So keep in mind: the goal of this weekly challenge is to get you comfortable turning to ChatGPT for help.  We’ll come back to how it can help your fundraising in the future.

Count me in! My team just added me to the test team for Microsoft Copilot so this is Week 1 of using my new AI sidekick.

Oh fun @carmen-rey! I’ve heard great things about Copilot! That’s a much better name than ChatGPT too 🙂

I’m in! Never used it before but there’s a part of me that thinks it could be incredibly valuable to help create first drafts of appeals, social posts and possibly newsletter articles. We’ll see.

Beautiful, @matt-fulks! I think you’ll really love what you can turn around with AI. The better info you put in, the better content you get back!

I’m in. I’ve only used it a few times before and look forward to getting better at it (now, If I can just remember my password).

We should have a weekly challenge whose goal is to get people to use a password manager like 1Password or something 😁
