| Who I am | After 9-11, my husband and I retired early and moved from the New York metropolitan area to Brigantine, NJ—an island town off the coast. In 2003, we traveled to East Africa with another couple. On our way out to see the mountain gorillas, we visited a school in a small truckstop town in Uganda. That short visit changed our lives. We met students who made the poor children of Belize look rich, and we left with a feeling that we must do something. Countless emails and nearly countless trips later, there is a thriving school for over 700 vulnerable students, ages 3 to 21, in Lukaya, Uganda. Recently, I attended Makerere University’s graduation ceremony as a ‘parent’ to two members of that first Mustard Seed class. |
| My Experience | I graduated from the University of Michigan in 1966. That tells you how old I am😉. My degree was in Biology, and I had minors in education and psychology. I’ve had more life experiences than my ‘ordinary’ beginnings suggest. Most of these experiences have, in some way, prepared me for the work I have been doing since 2005. The most noteworthy was leading trips to Belize for my advanced biology students with my late husband, a biology professor at City College of NY. Together, we also started a small dog training and behavior consulting business. The business helped pay for our two children’s private high school and college. It also gave us experience running a small business when home computers were new.
