I encourage board members to engage their peers by setting small, measurable benchmarks along with providing them with information they feel comfortable sharing. I then ask them to report back on their progress, successes and challenges. This helps them build confidence as they advocate, encourage, and ask their peers to support our organization.

I think one of the most important components of writing successful grants is to do research into what the specific mission and values of the granting organization are before crafting a narrative. If they lean towards economic development then I make sure the narrative includes the economic impact of our event. If they focus on health or community benefit, I make sure to include the mental or emotional health of our event and the sense of community pride that is instilled. When a granting board sees their benefactor’s intent reflected in the request, it becomes much easier to receive funding.

I have started asking business and corporate underwriters about their mission and values. I then ask them how they see our annual arts festival reflect their businesses’ values or mission in the event. If they don’t see a direct connection, I offer possibilities where their commitment to quality, service, community, etc. can be seen through the Smoky Hill River Festival and the difference they make by supporting the event.

Hello everyone! I am the Executive Director of Arts & Humanities for the City of Salina, KS. I’ve been to the NPSC twice and sent our operations and development manager in 2023. We really appreciate the excellent resources and connections provided through NPSC.

I entered my profile setup to change an item two different times. Each time I changed my nickname or job title it erased all the “about me” stuff below.

Hello Marti, I greatly appreciate all who work in the developmental disability field. My hometown has an excellent service provider, The Occupational Center of Central Kansas which offers a wide range of services and has been a great resource partner to our department.
